Advice for buying second hand...
- Pictures - check that the seller has used pictures of the actual item, and not just images taken from another website, such as ours!
- Body Only - does the camera come with a lens, or is it sold "body only", without a lens. Be careful to check what comes with the camera, make sure it comes with a battery and charger.
- Shutter count - check the shutter count, the lower the better, and if this is high then this should factor into the price.
- Warranty - check if the item comes with a warranty, unlikely unless you're buying from a second-hand dealer.
- Feedback - check the seller's feedback, either on sites like ebay, or you can check retailer ratings with TrustPilot.
- Buyer Beware - if it's "too good to be true" then chances are it is, check the description, seller, quality, often low priced items may have damage
- See if there are any special offers running, before buying.
- Check out the ePHOTOzine Classified Ads section for a potential bargain.
- See our guide to buying and selling on eBay.

Best Used Serious Compact Camera - Sony Cyber-shot RX100 II - Under £200
The Sony Cyber-shot RX100, when introduced in 2012, was the first of many more compact cameras with a larger than normal 1inch CMOS sensor, and following this camera a number of other companies joined in, producing cameras with a 1inch sensor, giving photographers access to better image quality, in a compact camera, without the need to go for a mirrorless or DSLR camera.
Compact but with a 1inch sensor, and a bright f/1.8 lens, the RX100 series is a good choice, because many of these have stayed on the market, even when new models were introduced, with the price dropping overtime on the previous versions. Therefore there are a number of options, and a number of price points available for these cameras, both new and used.
- RX100 (2012) - 20mp CMOS sensor, 3.6x optical zoom lens, f/1.8-4.9
- RX100 II (2013) - 20mp BSI CMOS Sensor, flash hot-shoe, 3.6x optical zoom lens, f/1.8-4.9
- RX100 III (2014) - introduced a pop-up EVF (1.44m dots), 2.9x optical zoom lens, 24-70mm equivalent, f/1.8-2.8
- RX100 IV (2015) - introduced a stacked sensor, 4K video, high-speed continuous shooting and video, and an improved 2.36m dot EVF
- RX100 V (2016) - 24fps continuous shooting at 20mp
The RX100 II introduced a BSI CMOS sensor and has a flash hot-shoe, available second hand from around £150-£200, making it a great budget option. The price goes up, as you move on to a newer version. However, the RX100 Mark III is another good option, as it introduced a built-in EVF, and a brighter f/1.8-2.8 lens.

Best Used Serious Compact with APS-C sensor - Fujifilm X100S - Under £400
The Fujifilm X100 shook the camera world when it was first shown at Photokina 2010. It brought back classic camera styling, along with external manual controls, and an optical viewfinder (optical/electronic hybrid) giving digital camera users the feeling of using a "true" camera. Some would say that it inspired Fujifilm's whole X-series, which led to the hugely successful Fujifilm X-mount mirrorless cameras.
- X100F - 2017, current version - 24mp sensor
- X100T - from 2014, 16mp APS-C sensor, from around £580
- X100S - from 2013 - 16mp APS-C sensor, from around £380 depending on the condition
- X100 - from 2011 - 12mp APS-C sensor, around £290 depending on the condition
The first version, the X100 is likely to be the cheapest available, but we'd go for the Fujifilm X100S as having the best price/performance.

Best Used Pocket Travel Zoom Camera - Panasonic Lumix TZ70 - Under £200
The Panasonic Lumix TZ70 offers a Leica branded 30x optical zoom lens, and this camera hit somewhat of a sweet spot, with a 12mp 1/2.3inch sensor, it's not trying to cram 18 or 20mp into a small sensor, instead by sticking with 12mp, it's offering the best compromise between detail and low-light performance. A firm favourite of ours.
Key features:
- 12mp sensor
- 30x optical zoom lens, 24-720mm equivalent
- Optical Image Stabilisation
- 3inch screen
- ISO80 to ISO6400
